About Tainan city tour
  • Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple

The temple was called the Daguandi Temple during the Jhengs rule. At the beginning of construction, the Ching Court deliberately raised the status of Guan, Yun-jhang in an attempt to separate Yue, Fei (a famous general in the Song Dynasty who fought bravely against foreign races from invading China), in order to avert the anti-Manchurian thought. Later, Guan became the only deity worshipped in Sacrificial Rites Martial Temple, and the temple even became a shrine where government rituals were held.
Guan is the most common deity in local religions. In spiritual worship, Guan is the symbol of sage and hero.

In Taoism, he is an administrative deity working in the central organization of heaven. Therefore, he is a deity of four identities: the deity of business, the deity of righteousness (loyalty), the deity of bravery, and the deity of vanishing demons and monsters.

At the bloom of the temple, it formed the Liuhojing (sextuple alliance) with temples in the six streets nearby and established the Liuhotang (sextuple alliance headquarters) as the joined office of those temples and the winter defense command headquarters. Though the temple played an increasingly important role in hey days, it was removed from the official shrine list during the Japanese Colonization. Yet, its status never changed in the mind of people. In 1983 it was listed as a Class I Historical Site and the renovation project is under progress.
